Trail Review: Whiting Woods Motorway

Parking: Free street parking by trailhead on Whiting Woods Road

Distance: 5.2 miles out & back

The biggest perk of this trail: How quiet it was. The Verdugo Mountain trails aren't quite as popular as trails in neighboring Griffith Park, but they still can see a fair amount of people. But this trail, perhaps because it's on the eastern side and starts in a small neighborhood, was so quiet that it felt like we had the trail all to ourselves. We saw maybe two people the whole time. Very nice during a pandemic.

The trail itself is pretty straightforward. It starts at the end of Whiting Woods Road, a shady little street. You emerge pretty quickly from the shade onto Whiting Woods Motorway, a wide, dirt fire road. You'll wind your way up the side of the mountain on this singular path for 2.6 miles. The incline is pretty consistent but never too difficult. There are some pretty wild flowers sprinkled around the edges of the trail from time to time.

You'll know you're at the end of the trail when you get to a large three-way intersection with the Verdugo Motorway and a big white sign that says "Whiting Woods Motorway". There is also a TV tower just above at the top of the mountain. If you feel so inclined, you can follow the Verdugo Motorway in either direction to keep the hike going. It does connect you to other parts of the Verdugo Mountain trails so may be a good add on if you want to extend the trek. But otherwise, you can head back the way you came and descend down into the little neighborhood of Whiting Woods.

Bottom Line: A straightforward trail that isn't all that special but it was super quiet and has decent views of the surrounding Mountains.
